Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Another Talented Artist

image

The Cherry Creek Arts Festival here in Denver Colorado is one of my favorite festivals.

This year on July 4th my stepdaughter and I connected with this artist.

Alex lives in Arizona and we aren’t as close as either of us would like to be.

As a surprise I went back on July 5th and picked out these two sets of earrings.

If we each were buying a pair Alex would have bought the pair that looks like twigs and I would’ve bought the flowers.

This is what we did.  We each keep one earring from each set to wear them together. Then we can think of each other when we are wearing them!

The artist was excited when she heard what we were going to do in to make the earrings even she put the flowers on short wires and the twigs on long wires so they are about the same length when we wear them.

We will be thinking of each other a lot!

The Cherry Creek Arts Festival here in Denver Colorado is one of my favorite festivals.

I enjoy connecting with the artists.  This year I was lucky enough to connect with maja and you can see more of her work here maja , http://majadesigns.com

My stepdaughter Alex was visiting for the week and we are trying to reconnect.   This festival was something we did together as a family when she was much younger.  We went on July 4 to check it out and she also loved this artist.

I went back on July 5 and picked out two sets of earrings.  And this is what we did:

We each keep one hearing from each set and wear them together. Then we can think of each other when we are wearing them!  Since she lives in Arizona this “brings us together across the miles”.

Kelly and Alex Practicing Father-Daughter Dance for her Wedding

I took this video of my husband Kelly and his daughter Alex practicing their father-daughter wedding dance over 2 years ago.  I haven’t had the heart to view this video since I took it.

Alex is visiting Denver for the week and staying with me.  We are reconnecting and I am reminded that it is okay for us to share this video and share our loss of Kelly together.

Together we can be reminded of Kelly’s great energy.  His belief that living each day fully and not worrying about the future was one of the keys to happiness.

Happy Father’s Day! Today’s Haiku

a special memory

shared with son and grandson

that radiant smile

Whenever I see my brother or my nephew smile it instantly triggers a memory of my dad.  This always lifts my soul. It’s something about the way they each use their “smile muscles”.

Aren’t families great for bringing back special memories in special ways?

Guest Blog Post Monty, My Human Brother

image

Hi my name is Monty and I am a regular guest blogger here on sanseilife.   My story today?  My human brother.

I have three brothers. Rommy, Roscoe and the human.

We can’t remember his human name but we call him Treat Master because he’s the only one of the four of us that can open this container:

He is also the only of my brothers that will cuddle me and let me snuggle. He likes naps almost as much as I do.

When mom says “What are you boys up to?” he’s included in the pack!

A Perfect Ending

I really don’t care for April Fool’s Day.  It was on April Fool’s Day 1984 when my brother had to call me and my sister and tell us our father had passed away.

This last Memorial Day weekend I had a chance to talk with someone who was with my dad during his last moments.

My dad was a Life Master bridge player and was competing in a tournament with one of his favorite partners, Masa.  He and Masa had been doing well and he was reviewing some of their results.  He just gently crumpled forward and at first Masa thought he was clowning around, fainting because they were doing so well.

It quickly became obvious that something was wrong and an announcement was made for anyone with medical training to come to his assistance.  There were doctors and other medical people playing in the tournament and he had immediate attention.  Unfortunately he had some kind of massive heart failure and had slipped away very quickly and quietly.

He was gone in just a moment with no pain, doing something he loved to do, surrounded by his friends and peers.

Here is my dad at one of his favorite activities, teaching bridge!

The classes, which meet each Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1585 Kingston St., also include yoga, painting, and stitchery and ceramics. There are also classes for preschool youngsters. Masa reminded me that dad’s last moments were doing something he loved.

How often do you hear someone say “I hope I go in my sleep”?

I was visiting him and my mom that morning and remember him getting ready to play in the tournament.  He was going to have a fun and happy day.

Thank you Masa for making a sad memory a happy one too!

Memorial Day 2015 Colorado Thank You to Our Military,

image

You are likely to find me in one of two places on Memorial Day.   Either way I will be honoring my father and his service to his country in the United States Military during World War II.

Sam Y. Matsumoto

In odd number years you will find me at the Nisei War Memorial at Fairmont Cemetery in Denver, Colorado singing with the choir for the annual Memorial Day service.   (Nisei is second generation here in America)

image

The Memorial is engraved with the names of Japanese American Nisei veterans from the Rocky Mountain region who served in the United States Armed Forces and who are now at rest.

image

In even number years you will find me at the Bolder Boulder, an annual Memorial Day 10K  honoring United States military.   This is a run, jog or walk race.

About 50,000 people participate every year and the race starts in over 90 waves depending on your speed.

image

The race finishes in Folsum Field. As you complete the race you enter the stadium where those who completed the race before you and other supporters cheer you over the finish line!

image

Each participant wears a special bib on their back with the name of the person they want to honor.

I am grateful for my country and the freedoms granted to its citizens which are protected by brave men and women like my dad.
